They are not interchangeable, and the one that suits you depends less on taste than on what you intend to do with it.

Traditional

Hand-built, often vintage in look, dense with detail, and usually sold with matched furniture. These are collector objects first.

• Against: expensive, and large — they need a dedicated surface, not a shelf.

Modern

Contemporary and pared back: clean lines, geometric shapes, machine-cut parts. This is where most kits sit.

• In their favor: affordable, easy to place in a current interior, quick to build.
• Against: less individual character out of the box — though paint and props fix that fast.

Themed

Built around a single idea: a Japanese tea house, a florist, a bookshop, a greenhouse. Heavily detailed, with props chosen to match the scene.

• In their favor: the most striking on a shelf, and the most fun to build — each part belongs to a story.
• Against: longer builds, and you have to actually like the theme.

Custom

Made to your own specification, by a maker or by you. Unique by definition.

• In their favor: exactly what you wanted, and nobody else has one.
• Against: the most expensive route, and the slowest.

How to pick, in four questions

1. What is it for? A child playing, a collection, or a display piece on a shelf. A play house needs robustness; a display piece needs lighting and detail.
2. How much room do you have? Traditional pieces need a table. A themed kit is typically 8 to 12 inches and lives happily on a bookshelf.
3. What is your budget? Modern and themed kits are the affordable end. Traditional and custom are not.
4. What do you want to look at every day? Warm and vintage, or clean and graphic. This is the one that actually decides it.
